Often times we blame external factors for our gloominess but the truth is that happiness begins from our thoughts and actions. Happiness is a choice that we make irrespective of the circumstances. If you have been screwing up your happiness, it’s time to make amends. Here are 10 signs that you are making yourself unhappy:

1. Thinking too much about yourself

Self-discovery and self-improvement are entirely different from narcissism and snobbery. By continuing to look down on others and finding faults with them will make one lonely and unhappy. Holding oneself extremely special prevents us from appreciating the accomplishments of others. So every time somebody attains success in life we become devastated.

2. Fast-tracking back into the past

Everyone has made terrible mistakes and wrong judgments in the past. Looking into the past for references is fine but staring at it for too long will be upsetting. People who live in the past waste their past which couldn’t result in a pleasant future.

3. Whiling away precious time

Technology and gadgets are meant to save us time. But presently we use them to waste our time without being productive. Detaching from creative hobbies can impair the mind and senses.

4. Being Materialistic

Don’t you agree that people with lesser material goods are happier than those who stuff their homes with a lot of belongings? Shopping is addictive; it gives an instant boost of happiness which is short-lived. Hence we are never content with anything.

5. Inviting Toxic relationships

Although you cannot instantly spot a toxic person, a couple of interactions will give you the idea. Do they talk negative all the time? Are they supportive and kind? Do you feel after having a conversation with them? These are some of the questions that you can ask yourself to identify toxic relationships.

6. Believing that happiness will find you

As mentioned earlier, happiness will not be served to you on a golden platter; it should come from within you. Striking an inner balance by having peaceful and positive thoughts will help attain happiness. Most people wait for happiness to find them in the form of a white-collar job, a spouse, a house, and the list never ends.

7. Losing sleep over happiness

Working or partying late night can only bring bad health and bad mood with it. According to studying, people who sleep late are more likely to caught in the web of depression. Going to bed on time and getting adequate deep sleep will liven your spirits.

8. Given up on learning

Learning should not stop with college. You can learn new things every day through people, experiences, hobbies, books and even by enrolling in classes. It keeps your brain young and brings positivity to life.

9. Harbouring Hatred

There are a lot of troubled people out there who would have done wrong to you. But when you hold a grudge against someone you are harboring negative feelings in you, and also giving that unpleasant person an opportunity to be a part of you.

10. Making comparisons

This attribute is something others especially parents instil in children. As they grow up this trait also grows up with them. There is always going to be someone better than you, the trick is to continue learning and honing your skills. Nobody is perfect but the successful ones are good at camouflaging their negatives and promoting their positives.
