Netflix’s announcement to cancel its Emmy-nominated political drama ‘House of Cards’ after the allegation of sexual misconduct on renowned actor Kevin Spacey broke hearts of many ‘House of Cards’ viewers. Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey of sexual harassment , which happened when Rapp was a minor.
Rapp said Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey made unwanted sexual advances on him by laying down on top of him at a party at his apartment in New York in 1986. At that time Rapp was 14 and Kevin was 26.
Kevin Spacey, two time Oscar winner for the films “American Beauty” and “The Usual Suspects,” said that Rapp’s story “had encouraged me to address other things in my life.”
“In my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I now choose to live life as a gay man,” Spacey said.
He also wrote “I want to deal with this honestly and openly,”
Spacey released an apology statement on Twitter saying he did not remember the incident, but that if it happened he believed it would have been “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior”.
Although Netflix spokeswoman Karen Barragan said that the decision to end ‘House of cards ‘was made months ago, long before the allegation surfaced against Spacey.
A statement from Media Rights Capital and Netflix said, “In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”
Many people on social media criticized at Kevin Spacey’s conflation of an apology for his sexual misconduct and a public acknowledgement of coming out as a gay.
