A Young Man Who Heroically Saved People In The Burnette Chapel Church Shooting

One parishioner was killed and seven more were wounded after a ski masked psychopath gunman opened fire on Sunday at the Burnette Chapel Church, authorities said. At the time of the shooting, about 50 people were in the church as services were ending. The gunman was identified as Emmanuel K. Samson, a 25-year-old Rutherford County man. Mr. Samson, a legal resident of the United States is an immigrated from Sudan, the police said, his motive in the shooting was unclear, and when contacted at two numbers associated with his address no one answered the phone.




Robert Engle, a 22 year old usher at the church heroically confronted the gunman. He ran to his car and got his gun, and guarded the shooter until police arrived, said police. During his confrontation with gunman Robert Engle was violently gun-whipped. During this confrontation with Robert Engle, the gunman shot himself in the left chest and got injured. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said Mr. Engle’s quick movement helped end the shooting. The police described him as an “extraordinarily brave individual”. Shortly after the shooting, all victims including the shooter were taken to area hospitals.

Police Chief Steve Anderson said

He’s the hero. He’s the person who stopped this madness.


Engle’s Grandmother Rheta Engle was so proud of his actions and said, “That’s like him. He’s just someone who cares about a lot of people.”

Mr. Engle issued a statement late on Sunday,

I do not want to be labeled a hero, the real heroes are the police, first responders, and medical staff and doctors who have helped me and everyone affected.

Robert Engle asked people to pray for the victims, their families and the church community as well as the gunman and his family and friends.
The suspect Emmanuel K. Samson was charged with felony homicide and was being held without bond. According to police other charges are coming later.

People and administration condemned this cruel act of violence and expressed their best wished for the victims.
